Taking care of my plants reminded me to stop and care for myself instead of pushing to exhaustion.
Hello morning anxiety before work!
The other day, I woke up super anxious and stressed about timelines and milestones for my writing project. Even when I tried meditating, I wanted to finish quickly and get back to my long to-do list. But when I realized I was trapped in the looping of creativity and problem-solving, I gathered myself and stayed in meditation for a bit longer. Once I sat to work, stress came back, driven by the need to be super productive.
For a split moment, I took a break between writing emails and saw my office plants looking sad (just like me) and realized they needed some care. Right then, it hit me - how hard it is to break the habit of putting work before my well-being. I saw that I intentionally overwhelmed myself, thinking I could only work well when stressed. Taking care of my plants reminded me to stop and care for myself instead of pushing to exhaustion.
1. Morning Mindful Start:
The next morning, I changed my routine. Instead of rushing meditation, I took more time to start the day calmly. The short breaks during the day helped me focus better on my work.
2. Nature's Desk Chill Zone:
My desk became a nature zone with plants and sunlight. Quick breaks mean opening the window to feel the fresh air, going outside, enjoying nature, looking after my office plants, and spending time with them. It became a refreshing break from stress.
3. Intersectionality Advocacy for Well-Being:
I was able to reshape my workplace culture and behavior patterns by incorporating mindfulness and nature into my work narrative. As a result, I started to have an inner dialogue about mental health, which challenged my belief that success required sacrificing well-being. It is from this awareness that I share my discoveries with others.
Here is the attainable balance by blending mindfulness and nature at work.
