Thanks To The Onion That Let Me See Clearly
How a Humble Vegetable Taught Me the Art of Surrender
Hola Friend, How is the new month treating you?
I was visiting family in Perú a few weeks ago, and one afternoon, I was walking by the street market and saw a red onion sitting at the counter of a street restaurant; the onion looked so happy, healthy, cool, calm, and collected wearing a beautiful pointy hat. When I say beautiful hat, I am referring to the sprout of the onion🧅, ever so green🌱 and full of vibrant colors. Simply beautiful!
This image got imprinted in my mind and heart because the onion was clearly following nature’s rhythm, and so were the humans caring for it and its sprouts. Perhaps they planned to harvest it for cooking later, or maybe they were showcasing it to draw attention to their food booth - if so, they did an excellent advertising job- or it is possible that they understood the significance of sprouts growing out of root vegetables like onions 🧅and potatoes🥔 as a sign of good energy and balance. While I may never know their true intentions, one thing is certain: When I locked eyes with the onion and heard the person in the kiosk say, “La naturaleza es sabia e indomable, ¿verdad?” which translated into English "Nature is wise, and indomitable, isn't it?" it sent chills down my spine. This simple and profound message reminded me to let go and rest.
It's very easy to get caught up in trying to anticipate every possible scenario. Still, this way of living can ultimately lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety.
How many times do we get so caught up in the illusion that we can control everything, including how many sprouts an onion produces?
Through my personal experience, I have come to realize that over-planning, excessive organization and constant rehearsing can actually cause more harm than good. It's very easy to get caught up in trying to anticipate every possible scenario. Still, this way of living can ultimately lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety, which can in turn prevent us from actually enjoying the moment.
While it is certainly important to have structure and a solid plan in place for various aspects of our lives, it is equally important to remember to take time to appreciate the present and not get too fixated on the final outcome. After all, isn’t the journey what truly matters? 🦋
Talking about Resting! 📸 In this picture, I am resting on the stairs of the Sanctuary of El Señor de Huanca, Cusco-Perú, about 9850 feet high, after a long pilgrimage day.
Going back to my experience with the onion in Perú, that left a lasting impact on me. I stood before this seemingly unremarkable vegetable, I allowed myself to fully immerse in the moment, engaging all my senses. I observed its unique shape, color, and texture, took in its pungent aroma, felt its smooth skin, and even listened to the faint rustling of its leaves.
Despite being a mere vegetable, the onion, wearing a beautiful hat 👒, spoke lot to me in its own simple language. Through this encounter, I learned some valuable life lessons and this unbreakable truth.
🪴I realized that I cannot control everything in life, no matter how hard I try.
🎋I learned that it's not wise to base my daily decisions solely on what might or might not happen.
🍂I came to understand that while it's essential to have a plan of action and do my best, I must also be willing to surrender control and let nature take its course.
I am sharing this with you in hopes of inspiring you to pause ⏸️ and appreciate your small victories🥳. It's important to celebrate when you've given your all in any situation, whether personal or work-related. Take the time to rest, let things unfold naturally, and don’t forget to see the beauty that comes in different forms, like the sprouts of an onion.
