🍃The Hidden Recipe: Navigating Emotions at Work
Cultivating self-compassion is crucial to this formula to reach overall wellness!
During my early years of marriage and entrepreneurship, I discovered that the word “Radical” creates different emotional responses and has different connotations in Spanish and English. I used the term “Radical” to describe my work and shared with my husband that a workshop I was presenting (in Spanish) was sold out, and I felt it was because of the “Radical” ideas I was presenting. However, my husband didn’t understand why I wanted to use the word Radical and suggested I use “innovative” instead. I explained that in Spanish, “Radical” refers to something that belongs to its roots and denotes an intended transformation that shakes people, systems, and communities to their core and doesn’t have a negative connotation.
My work involves accompanying people, primarily women, to recover emotional strength. I offer them tools that shake their whole being, making it a radical method. Cultivating self-compassion is crucial to this formula to reach overall wellness!
Let me tell you why:
Developing self-compassion may seem radical because it will break the ways one embraces the world; honestly speaking, this is something that many have not been taught to do, and to that effect, we have to learn and train to be compassionate towards ourselves.
I see how beneficial it is for women with multicultural backgrounds to adopt this self-compassion attitude when facing the crushing reality of language limitations. I experienced this firsthand when I explained to my husband why my work is considered radical in many aspects and why using that term is appropriate for the women I support.
When immigrant women feel confident enough to speak their truth, even in the face of language barriers, it empowers them to embrace their unique identities and experiences.
Wellness Tips:
If you or someone that you know have relocated to a new country with a different language, here are some tips to use in daily life in the new environment that I promise will make a difference and improve your whole self:
1. Acknowledge that learning a new language and how others approach the world takes time and effort.
2. Be patient with yourself and embrace all the learning opportunities as part of the learning process.
3. Recognize that it’s okay to struggle with language barriers and value your unique perspective and experiences as a bilingual woman with a multicultural and diverse background.
4. And the most important one, remember that you are not defective or broken because of how you sound when you speak.
With this approach, we can challenge narrow and compartmentalized theories and narratives and actively promote a cyclical trajectory that includes all the different parts that make you who you are in society and as a whole.
